Background and History

1991

  • Founded and incorporated as the first postpartum Doula home-care service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
  • Implemented postpartum Doula service.

1992

  • Initiated Medela breastpump rental station.
  • Designed professional RN maternal-infant assessment program for early discharge.
  • Added RN Board Certified Lactation Consultant to staff.
  • Contracted with a local hospital to provide professional RN and paraprofessional Doula follow-up visits to their maternity patients.

1993

  • Licensed by the Department of Health in Virginia.
  • Labor Support Doula Program added in October.
  • Began offering private in-home childbirth preparation classes.

1994

  • Received accreditation by the National Association of Postpartum Care Services (NAPCS).

1995

  • Family Care Assistant program added to provide non-technical support to prenatal high-risk clients to prenatal high risk clients on bed rest and assist mothers with their families during the postpartum period with routine household chores and activities.

1996

  • Gerri Levrini is appointed President, NAPCS for 2-year term.

1998

  • Expanded Breastfeeding Program to offer consultation and educational services to local corporate businesses and women in the community.

2001

  • Contracted with Severn Healthcare Systems to provide postpartum Doula care and lactation consultation to Kaiser Permanente Baltimore-area patients.

2002

  • Affiliated with the Childbirth And Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA).
  • Mother & baby Matters' Postpartum Doula Training approved by CAPPA.
  • Postpartum and labor support Doula staff began certifying through CAPPA.

2003

2004

  • Designed two levels of doulas based on experience (Novice & Experienced/Certified)
  • Moved office in November 2004

2005

  • Doula Institute of Northern Virginia (DINOVA) instituted for the training of postpartum Doulas.
  • Professional Development Ladder provided for Doula advancement
  • Terminated affiliation with CAPPA

2006

  • Discontinued Medela Pump Rental Program.
  • Increased marketing on line and in community 
  • Instituted TLC (Tender Loving Caregiver) program to provide lower cost, non-technical overnight support for families who do not require the teaching abilities of a Doula.
  • Gerri Levrini invited to serve on the Advisory Board of Preemie Magazine.

2009

  • Mother & baby Matters redesigns web site for easier navigation by potential clients.
  • Instituted program to offer complimentary one-hour visits by a Certified Lactation Consultant with every Postpartum Doula service package.
