Our Services

The goal of our program is to assist the new mother in creating a personally fulfilling birth and postpartum experience. Motherly care and guidance are provided by a professional staff of doulas, (pronounced Doo-la) a Greek word for those who mother the mother.  These doulas can be either labor support birth doulas or postpartum (after the birth) doulas.

Many mothers discover that the challenges they face once they bring their newborn(s) home are more than they anticipated.  Current reserach has shown that women who are nurtured during their early postpartum days, allowed to rest and bond with their infants, and taught the basics of newborn care experience:

  • More success with breastfeeding

  • Better postpartum adjustment

  • Less postpartum depression

  • More overall confidence in their parenting

Mother & baby Matters individually tailors its service to meet the unique needs of each client and his or her family including cesarean, multiples and high-risk birth. Our office staff can assist in determining anticipated needs.

Labor Support

Before labor our doula will provides one or two in-home birth planning session(s) to discuss your priorities, and is available for telephone support at any time.

During labor, the birth doula:

  • Offers non-medical continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and information to aid decision-making
  • Uses relaxation techniques, guided imagery, massage, positioning, hot or cold packs, baths or showers, patterned breathing, and attention focusing techniques
  • Makes a woman's birth experience a positive memory with rich rewards and feelings of accomplishment
  • Acts as a liaison between the laboring woman, her partner and clinical care provider, and is familiar with hospital procedures

After delivery, the birth doula assists with postpartum procedures and early breastfeeding. Over the next few days, the doula keeps in touch by phone and arranges a visit to review the labor and answer questions.

Overnight Help

Our Overnight Newborn Specialist team who are certified Postpartum Doula's provide expertise and focus on newborn care through a variety of package plans. They also provide troubleshooting with breastfeeding issues, and light household duties such as baby laundry. Package plans are offered which can be utilized on a flexible basis with a minimum of 6 hours per overnight to a maximum of 12 hours per overnight period.  Extended overnight services are most beneficial for families with multiples, a newborn experiencing reflux, or a premature infant on a monitor.

Who uses overnight services?

Anyone who has problems with sleep deprivation, or has a history of or is experiencing depression can benefit from overnight services. Overnight services are widely used especially in the case of a multiple birth. Almost all parents of multiples, even those who have family help, usually need some type of overnight assistance from outside sources. Extended care should be anticipated and arranged in advance as early as possible to assure coverage. As you recover, you can begin to wean the overnight coverage and use fewer nights per week. Some of our overnight staff specialize in caring for twins and have developed an expertise in helping to establish feeding and sleeping patterns. First time mothers can relax and enjoy the comfort and reassurance those first couple of nights home after delivery by utilizing our overnight doula services. The use of overnight services during the hospital stay especially following cesarean sections are becoming increasingly popular.

Plan A:  50 hour volume plan

Plan B:  100 hour volume plan

Plan C:  Hourly a la carte

Sleep Coaching

Hardly a day goes by without a new "Sleep Training" technique being a topic for exhausted parents. Here at Mother and baby Matters we review all the latest sleep literature and have thousands of hours of experience in getting babies to sleep. In more than 20 years of practice, we have realized there is no "one size fits all" solution, but rather several strong approaches that can be customized to each individual family depending on their unique situation and childcare philosophy. We recommend most babies begin the Sleep Coaching techniques around 4 months of age.

We begin with an extensive consultative process utilizing a sleep assessment tool to determine which approach fits you best. Then we send in one of our Sleep Coaches to help you apply the new approach and tailor it specifically to your family. Your Sleep Coach can work by your side the first few nights simply to offer support or completely implement the sleep plan. Or, if you prefer, all consultations can be conducted over the phone and via email for a reduced rate.

In-Home Consult - Minimum 2 hour visit. No registration fee required.

Phone Consult - Phone time can be split as needed. Billed in 15 minute increments. No registration fee required.

Twins and Multiples

Mother and baby Matters Newborn Specialists can care for your babies during the night so that you can sleep. If you are breastfeeding, they will bring the babies to you to breastfeed for simultaneous or seperate feedings. Otherwise, they will bottle feed either pumped breastmilk or formula as directed. They will meet the babies' needs in-between feeds for burping, changing, rocking or other calming methods to assist in helping a fussy baby.

Our Certified Postpartum Doulas who specialize in twins can help in the beginning by exploring the different options for breastfeeding multiples, full and partial breastfeeding, discuss sleep arrangements, setting up a routine and sleep/wake/feeding schedules for your babies. And since prematurity is more common with multiples, Mother and baby Matters staff are specialized in helping with issues related to premature births.

Both our Postpartum Doulas and Overnight Newborn Specialsit work together with our Lactation Consultants to carry out a plan that best fits your family's needs.
